In 2012, the Department of Global Health (DGH) launched the world’s first Doctor of Philosophy in Global Health Metrics and Implementation Science. The creation of a new Department of Health Metrics Sciences (HMS) in 2018 has shifted the academic home of faculty based at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, whom have been instrumental in designing, launching and supporting the current PhD program.

In response to this change, the Departments of Global Health and Health Metrics Sciences are in the process of proposing changes to the administration of this program in which the Doctor of Philosophy in Global Health Metrics and Implementation Science would be jointly administered and offered by both departments. Under this arrangement, the core faculty and curriculum for the degree will remain the same, but students will apply to the department that best matches their primary interest - Department of Global Health for students with a primary interest in Implementation Science, and the Department of Health Metrics Sciences for students with a primary interest in Metrics.
