Choice-Based PrEP Delivery for Transgender People in Uganda
This mixed-methods project will use the PRECEDE-PROCEED model to evaluate choice of PrEP formulation (injectable or oral PrEP) and choice of delivery approach (community or facility delivery) for transgender people, an important, under-researched key population in sub-Saharan Africa. This project is sponsored by Makerere University Infectious Diseases Institute in Uganda. It employs a community engaged approach to choice-based PrEP delivery to identify key programmatic design elements that will achieve optimal adherence and persistence among a population with the highest HIV risk on a continent with the highest HIV burden. Funding is provided through an R01 grant from the National Institute of Mental Health. Primary collaborators are Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
