Global Health Clinical Elective (GHCE)

The Global Health Clinical Elective (GHCE) was developed in 2011 to help meet student demand for clinical training opportunities in developing countries. This course was developed from and improved upon our former International Health Electives (IHE) program, which had sent fourth-year medical students abroad since 2003. There was recognition that with the increasing interest in global health, there was a need to create structured, streamlined, educationally sound, ethically responsible experiences for students to learn about medical care in developing country settings.

The GHCE was developed through a unique collaboration between the UW Department of Global Health and the clinical departments of Medicine, Family Medicine, OB/GYN, and Pediatrics. It is listed as Conjoint 625, and has been approved as an official clinical elective by the UW School of Medicine.
