Major: Medical Anthropology

Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am an Indian-American who has spent the vast majority of my life in the Seattle area. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, writing, spending time with my cat (when he’s not napping) and going to beaches in search of beach glass.

Why did you choose to pursue global health courses/a minor in Global Health?

My choice to minor in global health came during my first quarter as a freshman, when I took GH 210 - a seminar class. I was enraptured from the first guest speaker onward, and from then onwards proceeded to take more global health related classes and finally declare a minor in GH.

How does the minor complement your core major studies?

My minor actually influenced my major! I chose to study Medical Anthropology, which shares several similarities to the field of global health. Medical Anthropology focuses around the culture of medicine, which is an important aspect in global health.

What has been most valuable about your Global Health coursework/learning thus far?

The most valuable part of my global health coursework has been doing research on a variety of topics in my GH 101 and GH 210 courses. It helped me learn more about health systems and disparities around the world. Additionally, I have learned to write cohesive GH research reports.

What are your professional goals?

I hope to work in the public health sector in the future--in research or policy, either would be wonderful for me.

Please share your recommendation for prospective and/or current undergraduate students on ways in which they may maximize their experience in Global Health.

Do your own personal research! You don’t have to be formal about it, but you can choose a topic and learn to find credible sources. The DGH website and GH professors offer a wealth of information on events about various GH research topics.
