The Department of Global Health is pleased to announce that Dr. Gabrielle O’Malley has accepted the position of Vice-Chair. “She will be a tremendous addition to the DGH leadership team and I can't think of a better person to step into this role,” said Interim Chair Dr. Carey Farquhar. “Gabrielle brings to the position a data-driven approach to problem-solving, excellent listening and communication skills, and extensive leadership experience.” 

Gabrielle is currently the I-TECH Director of Implementation Science and an Associate Director for the Developmental Core of the Behavioral Research Center for HIV (BIRCH). As Vice-Chair her role and responsibility within the department will expand to include support and oversight of faculty affairs. “I’m especially interested in ensuring optimal onboarding and mentoring processes are in place for both recent and future faculty appointments. I also hope to refine administrative processes to make them more transparent, efficient, and aligned with the Department’s commitment to centering diversity, equity, and inclusion.” 

The majority of Gabrielle’s current research and practice portfolio focuses on implementation science and large-scale program implementation projects in sub-Saharan Africa. Before joining the University of Washington faculty, Gabrielle worked as a program evaluator and qualitative researcher for clients in both the private and public sectors for nearly 20 years. 

As Vice-Chair, Gabrielle wants to make faculty and staff feel heard and supported so they can do their best work. “One of DGH’s greatest strengths is the faculty and staff and their broad range of backgrounds,” said Gabrielle. “One of the things I most appreciate about our department is its deep commitment to a learning culture, that is, thoughtfully reflecting on lessons from the past to improve the ways we move into the future.”
