Match Day Goes Virtual (UW Medicine - Quotes August Longino)

The COVID-19 crisis has brought a whirlwind of changes that have impacted everyone in our community — including this year’s graduating class of medical students at UW School of Medicine. 

In the last few weeks, the students were pulled from their clinical rotations early.

Then, the difficult and unprecedented decision was made to hold the School’s Match Day ceremony online.

Fulbright Program Brings Six Students to Department of Global Health

This year, the Department of Global Health welcomed six Fulbright scholars from Tunisia, Malawi, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Colombia. The Fulbright program provides prestigious grants that cover an academic year of living, studying, and engaging with the community at U.S. universities. Applying students submit a statement of defined activities they will pursue during their time in America, with graduate students having to demonstrate a capacity for independent study or research.

DGH Students Gain Global Health Knowledge in Peace Corps

While completing a Masters of Public Health in the Department of Global Health, students have several ways to gain research and fieldwork experience around the world. Students have fellowship opportunities that allow for hands-on training in a multitude of countries, but the Peace Corps represents another way to apply classroom curriculum at UW to the real world.

UW Department of Global Health Welcomes New Students

This year, the UW Department of Global Health (DGH) welcomes 65 new graduate students. These newest Huskies hail from 15 different countries (Afghanistan, Canada, China, Colombia, Indonesia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Peru, Rwanda, Sudan, Tunisia, Uganda, United States).  They join the 139 continuing students already enrolled in Global Health MPH and PhD programs (68 MPH students, 45 PhD in Global health students, and 26 PhD in Pathobiology students).

Eteni Longondo (MPH, 2005) Named Head of Ministry of Public Health in DRC

Dr. Eteni Longondo (MPH, 2005) has been appointed head of the Ministry of Public Health in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). After studying medicine at the University of Kinshasa in his native DRC, Longondo received a Master of Public Health from the University of Washington. 

In addition to his work with the Ministry of Public Health, Longondo's experience also includes working as a doctor for Congo's national soccer team, serving as a general practitioner in Switzerland, and work with World Vision and United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Close Up: 2018 Omenn Award Winners

This year's recipients of the Omenn Award for Academic Excellence, the School's highest honor, are breaking new ground in occupational safety and global mental health. Efforts by Katrin Fabian, an MPH graduate in global health, could improve mental health care for more patients in Liberia. Research by Miriam Calkins, who received a PhD in environmental and occupational hygiene, could lead to measures that better protect workers from heat exposure.
