Two SPH doctoral students named 2024-2025 Magnuson Scholars

Congratulations to University of Washington School of Public Health doctoral students Amanda Brumwell and Miriana Duran on being named 2024–2025 Magnuson Scholars! The scholarships, announced May 9, recognize one student annually from each of the UW Health Sciences schools on the basis of outstanding academic performance and potential contributions to research in the health sciences. 

Amanda Li on intentionality and embracing challenging conversations in global health

As a global health master’s student in the UW School of Public Health, Amanda Li has been thoughtfully engaging with Asian American communities in King County, rural communities across the U.S., and global communities in Kenya to support public health communications that align with those populations’ needs and goals. For her academic excellence and commitment to public health, Li received the 2024 Gilbert S. Omenn Award for Academic Excellence, one of the most prestigious School-wide recognitions for master’s and doctoral students.

The Excellence Awards celebrates members of the SPH community for their dedication, service, and many contributions to public health. Congratulations to all our awardees!

Grace John-Stewart receives the 2024 Marsha L. Landolt Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award

Congratulations to University of Washington School of Public Health faculty Grace John-Stewart for receiving the 2024 Marsha L. Landolt Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award! The Landolt Award recognizes faculty who exemplify excellence in graduate student education. John-Stewart along with the other UW award recipients will be honored on June 6, at the annual UW Awards of Excellence Ceremony.

MLK Award Recipient is a DGH Member for Sixth Consecutive Year

In 1957 in Montgomery, Alabama, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. addressed an audience and stated that “life's most persistent and urgent question is, ‘what are you doing for others?’" Today his legacy is one of service and community impact. To honor that legacy, The School of Public Health participates in the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute sponsored by UW Health Sciences Schools, UW Health Sciences Administration and UW Medicine. 

DGH Faculty and Fellows Receive 2020 New Investigator Awards

The UW/Fred Hutch Center for AIDS Research is delighted to announce the 2020 New Investigator Award recipients.  The purpose of this award program is to encourage junior investigators (at a senior stage of training or recently independent) to conduct independent research, acquire preliminary data to use for exogenous grant submissions, publish, receive mentorship, and write one or more grants to obtain funding to continue their HIV/AIDS research careers.

Kristie Ebi Receives Honorary, Lifetime NASEM Title

Kristie Ebi of the University of Washington School of Public Health was recently designated a National Associate of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, an honorary title that recognizes Ebi’s extraordinary service to help provide analysis and advice to the government and the public on matters of science, engineering and medicine.

CFAR Announces Recipients of New Investigator Awards

The University of Washington/Fred Hutch Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) present the New Investigator Awards each year. These awards fund and support HIV and AIDS research by new, promising investigators early in their careers. The 2019 awards will allow Department of Global Health researchers, Kristin-Beima Sofie, Katrina Ortblad, and Arianna Means to study ways to empower caregivers of adolescents living with HIV, PrEP delivery by community pharmacies, and nutritional services for HIV-exposed children in Kenya.
