Amanda Li on intentionality and embracing challenging conversations in global health

As a global health master’s student in the UW School of Public Health, Amanda Li has been thoughtfully engaging with Asian American communities in King County, rural communities across the U.S., and global communities in Kenya to support public health communications that align with those populations’ needs and goals. For her academic excellence and commitment to public health, Li received the 2024 Gilbert S. Omenn Award for Academic Excellence, one of the most prestigious School-wide recognitions for master’s and doctoral students.

Familiar ingredients make Afghan Food Guide easy to swallow

Diet recommendations can include unfamiliar foods and preparations.  A digital handbook created by Priyasha Maharjan, doctor of global health leadership and practice student, and fellow UW School of Public Health graduate student Norma Garfias Avila, hopes to begin solving this problem. The Afghan Food Guide is a nutritional resource created for the Afghan community and their health care providers in the U.S. It shows the nutritional values of foods, balanced meals and portion sizes while using dishes and cultural examples familiar to Afghan people.
