By 8:30 most mornings, Carey Farquhar has already exercised, dropped her kids at school and taken part in at least two calls with colleagues in Kenya. A ground-breaking HIV researcher and long-time mentor, she hopes to develop a more diverse student body as well as launch more fieldwork opportunities for students in Asia. She was recently named associate chair for academic programs in the Department of Global Health.

Research Passion: Promoting HIV testing within couples in Africa

A chance meeting with a fellow scientist 27 years ago forever changed Randy Kyes’ life — catapulting him from North Carolina to Indonesia and beyond. As the founding director of the University of Washington’s Center for Global Field Study and head of the Division of Global Programs at the Washington National Primate Research Center, Kyes has spent almost three decades leading field courses on environmental and global health in a dozen countries.

Faculty member Aaron Katz's passion is researching health care markets, policy and outcomes. "Do people get the care they need at the time they need it for an affordable price?" he asks in the latest SPH Close Up. Katz is an Adjunct Principal Lecturer of Global Health in addition to his appointment as Principle Lecturer of Health Services.
